Emma Welman from No Chintz, April 2014

Tuesday, April 01, 2014

This month, we thought it was time that you got to know the talented team at No Chintz Fabrics, a Sydney-based company specialising in supplying stunning textiles and fabrics for their clients’ interior designs.

We selected Emma Welman to be our April Designer of the Month - we love the way she marries the beautiful textiles No Chintz sources from across the world, with our very own soft-furnishing ranges. It’s a match made in heaven.

Read our short interview with Emma where we ask why she loves doing what she does and what inspires her most, and scroll down further to see her stunning portfolio of work with No Chintz.

Introducing No Chintz

We spoke to Emma Welman about No Chintz, her passions and inspirations, and how she collaborates with BQ to make clients' dreams a reality.

Where is No Chintz based?

We have three Sydney stores - one in the Eastern suburbs at Woollahra, one on the lower North Shore in Willoughby and one in the Inner West suburb of Balmain.

What do No Chintz specialise in?

No Chintz specialise in textiles and their use in the home. We offer the best in soft furnishing manufacturing in Australia through our design services. We carry a modestly priced stock fabric range, which we source from a large range of leading Australian and overseas textile suppliers. We also carry a ready-made range of soft furnishing/home decorating products, which reflect our quality and style.

What type of clients do you work with?

We usually work with clients who have an appreciation for fabrics and colour. They’re often Architects and Interior Designers, but we also have clients who aren’t in the industry, who wish to be involved in the final choice and finish of their home interiors. Many of our wonderful clients are repeat customers - as we have been in business for over 21 years - who appreciate the skills and attention we bring to transforming their home.

What is it that drew you to this profession?

I knew at a very early age that I wanted to be an Interior Designer and my father, who was also a creative person, encouraged me to pursue this career path. We moved house frequently growing up and I would always imagine alternative floor plans and finishes for the specific house we were living in. I’ve always been drawn to beautiful finishes and textures and enjoy creating schemes using these elements in clients’ homes.

What inspires you as a designer?

I often draw inspiration from beautiful fabrics, architecture and the way colour works in nature. I am also inspired when I travel to other parts of the world - I like seeing international designers and how they interpret their own environments.

What advice would you give to someone starting out in his or her career?

I would suggest they get a formal qualification because you need basic theory in addition to practical experience in whichever part of the industry attracts you - be it in textiles, furniture, lighting, floor coverings, an architectural firm or any other company that is related.

I would also encourage staying up-to-date on products and what’s happening in the world of design - including technology. I cannot stress the importance of customer service and relationships; these are skills that will carry you throughout your career.

What are the benefits of working with BQ Design?

BQ Design produces a range of well-made high quality products, which we feel confident in supplying to our clients to help transform their homes. BQ Design provides great customer service, which allows us to feel confident when we’re organising individual jobs and, in turn, provides our client with great service. We believe BQ Design have worked very hard in providing quality of service and manufacturing - we hope our relationship with them is a long one.
