A quick chat with Elle

What is your role at BQ Design?

To be the face of BQ Design in New South Wales and grow the business.

Tell us a little about your background?

My father was a tailor, so I guess I inherited his genes in becoming quite an avid sewer. As a teenager my weekends involved buying a Vogue pattern and a length of John Kaldor fabric and I would have a new outfit made by Sunday evening which was bespoke and much desired by my friends.

I think this early training holds me in good stead when speaking with customers. I always dreamt of working for John Kaldor and this dream was realised - not on the apparel side of the business but assisting the Kaldors with growing the soft furnishings division. My specialty was upholstery fabric and we were a small team growing a new brand and so it was often required that you would be familiar with drapery fabrics as well. After the closure of John Kaldor I moved into the textile industry and worked for Zepel in Sydney and Charles Parsons both in Auckland and Sydney.

What do you enjoy about working with BQ Design?

That's easy! When you work for a company that has successfully manufactured custom made soft furnishings for just on 35 years - your reputation is everything! I revel when I hear existing or new customers say - they have heard of BQ and that our product is outstanding. I wish I had a dollar for every time a client says - 'BQ make the best roman blinds'. Add to this a customer service team with in excess of 60 years experience and a workroom the size of an aircraft hanger with state of the art machinery and a team of craftsman who take pride in their work. I recall the advertisement for the job at BQ - it read 'plenty of head office support'. All true!

What are some of the biggest challenges you face?

The tyranny of distance - what I mean by this is that whilst I am good with working autonomously - often bouncing ideas or challenges over the phone or by email - the message can be lost.

My key role is to grow the NSW BQ customer base - there are numerous design courses available these days but unfortunately very little technical information is included. Workrooms in the Sydney region are retiring and this often means that enormous skill-sets are being lost from the trade. At BQ we pride ourselves via our customer service team with helping 'new' decorators/designers complete order forms and provide fabric requirements. Our Melbourne sales and marketing team works very closely with RMIT and next year we are hopeful of including NSW TAFE colleges in this program.

What are some of your biggest successes?

Recently I have been building rapport with the team at Greg Natale Design and working on the Mirvac Belle Harold Park display apartment, which will soon be showcased in Belle magazine.

In general I enjoy meeting new designers/decorators and providing assistance regarding our product range and showing them that BQ can, and always will, endeavour to bring their ideas to life. I also love touching base with existing experienced customers who may have taken time out from the trade to grow their family or take a break - bringing them up to date with what's new at BQ and on trend.

What projects are you working on right now?

I am in the process of contacting the House & Garden Top 50 interior designers - some of whom are already customers of BQ Design. I like to think outside the box - a colleague from BQ stayed in a Sydney hotel recently and called me to say she felt the soft furnishings in her room were looking a little worse for wear, I had soon organised an appointment with the Group's in-house design team to discuss how BQ Design can assist in updating their soft furnishings. I also work with many commercial fit out companies, another growing side of business in New South Wales.

If you are based in Sydney or New South Wales, please contact Elle to discuss your soft furnishing needs via email on elle@bqdesign.com.au or 0424 182 053.
