Housed in New South Wales, South Coast Living Interiors are inspired by coastal landscapes and mountain views that are beautifully reflected in the colours and furnishings of their interior spaces. For the last thirty years Charlene, alongside her mother, has operated their interior design business using a unique method that brings their showroom directly to the client.

We sat down with Charlene to find out more about South Coast Living Interiors and their truly mobile showroom.

Introducing Charlene Cooke

Tell us what makes South Coast Living unique?

South Coast Living has been in business for over thirty years. We specialise in small to large residential and commercial decorating projects. I think what really makes us stand out is our mobile design and decorating service - all run from our vans, which are decked out with all the samples and swatches you could imagine.

We provide expert advice on all aspects of decorating, working from the plan to the finished product. Colour consulting, kitchen and bathroom design, floor coverings, custom made furniture, furnishings, blinds, curtains, shutters and exterior motorised awnings are all part of the service we provide. We’re extremely passionate about our work and pride ourselves on our team of expert and experienced installers.

Where are you based?

Based in the beautiful Mollymook Beach area, we work with clients covering the South Coast 0f NSW, from Sydney through to the Southern Highlands and Canberra.

Tell us about how you started South Coast Living Interiors?

My mother and I started South Coast Living three decades ago. When we started out, we were based in a large home furnishing store in Ulladulla on the South Coast of NSW.

After ten years of carrying samples in and out of homes, we realised their was a real need for mobile showrooms, particularly when we are covering such long distances. So, I began custom building my vans to carry all of my samples. Now I can visit clients in the comfort of their own home with everything I need at my fingertips.

What inspires you as a designer?

I have been passionate about design and colour all my life. I studied art and graphic design after school and have been working in the world of interior decorating ever since.

I never get tired of the colours that surround me and I am greatly influenced by the colours of nature. Living on the coast most of my life, I’m constantly drawing inspiration from the natural colours of the mountains and the sea.

Do you have a particular specialty?

I have a love of beautiful fabrics and patterns that I get to exercise through my strong knowledge of custom-made soft furnishings. I’m capable of designing and choosing fabrics for any application – for curtains, bedspreads, bedheads, pelmets or cushions.

What advice would you give someone just starting out in the industry?

I feel you always need to keep up with trends in design, colour and, 0f course, products and product knowledge. There are so many options out there now and it can really confuse customers, so good product knowledge is vital for advising and installation.

What are the benefits of partnering with BQ Design?

A good portion of our business these days is using fully motorised products. Working with BQ Design on all of these products makes life a lot easier as BQ Design manufactures everything we require.

Any big plans for the future?

I feel that it is important for anyone that has been in business for over 20 years to stand back and take a good look at their business every now and again.

After 30 years we have all the knowledge but we still need to present well against our competitors, so we are having a face-lift.

Our plans include a new van giving our business a fresh new look, new programs to smarten up our quoting, new advertisements with some fresh new branding names, but we’ll always maintain that good old-fashioned service.
